Recently, the only three independent countries in Africa, (at least, independent of the feudal and hegemonic stranglehold of #collectiveWest), Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger, took the unprecedented step of forming an alliance of the three nations, which they described as a Confederation.
Many people seem to be curious, if not enthusiastic, about the formation of a confederation in the West African sub region, considering the antecedental disposition of the #West towards any formation of any block that they consider inimical, detrimental, or even at cross purposes with their already established route for relentless, brutal, and unconscionable exploitative parasitism.
What is Confederation?
A confederation simply coming together in alliance, on mutual understanding of the basis of the relationship, for the maximum benefit of all the parties involved. In the case of confederation of nations, it naturally means that the nations concerned are coming together, under one umbrella of a bigger union, with loose federations, joining forces, to synergize and pursue their goals of common interest, just like United Kingdom or United States of America. These could involve a wide range of areas, with emphasis, sometimes, on areas of operational commonality, and exclusive areas of operational non-interference.
Equally, such confederations could be viewed from the prism of unanimity of purpose, encapsulation of ideals, crystallization of visions, by fully independent nations, as they come together to form a common Union, for the purpose of pursuing their joint mutual goals. In this category, such examples as European Union, Ecowas, and other sub regional examples can suffice.
Scope of AES/ASS
From the above definition, it can be seen easily that there is a specific or definite scope associated with forming of confederations which are usually the unavoidable features of the union. Firstly, the confederating parties, being individually independent parties (nations, in this case), limit their scope of operations to a point or boundary, not exceeding their international borders, as doing so will amount to, and be seen as a deliberate act of provocation or even aggression.
They retain a high percentage of their autonomy, particularly in areas of domestic affairs. Because of this retention of autonomy, all local or internal affairs are handled with ease, and prompt attention given to every matter with the despatch it requires for the maximization of the well-being of the people.
Implications
One of the wider implications of confederations is predicated on the latent, inherent, and formidable force that is embedded at the root of its existence. This means that though the units that come together in a confederation may be meagre individually, the force generated on coming together in a confederation usually turns out being MEGA collectively.
With this convergence of meagre powers or forces, the greatness and formidability of the resultant energy becomes almost indomitable. This being the case, it means that all the external affairs will be handled and treated with a singularity and commonality of perception, collective analysis, and integrated solution profferment.
Apart from external affairs, some internal affairs of common interest can be usually jointly handled as a further strategy to reduce cost, inconveniences, or to plug loopholes that can easily be capitalized upon by external adversaries. In this category can be found such issues as military operations, currency provision and regulation, and some other international economic activities.
Among the implications of a confederation is the fact any single member of the confederation is always treated as a component part of the whole, and so, cannot be negligible, under any circumstance, nor be relegated as insignificant in the comity of nations.
Another implication of a Confederation is the fact that with its existence, internal harmony is maximally achieved, while external cooperation assures the confederates of maximum beneficial positive outcomes, resulting from the synergization birthed by the confederacy.
