Is Nigeria Paying the Price for Their Hatred of Biafrans? Part 1.

By Ifeoma Okeke (Abia writers)

I believe everything Mazi Nnamdi Kalu said has come to manifestation. All the doubting Thomases have finally seen the handwriting on the wall, indicating that oil and water can never mix; kerosene and water, when combined, cannot become one because water will settle at the bottom while kerosene rises to the top. The handwriting on the wall is that the three ethnic groups in Nigeria are poles apart and should go their separate ways. Forcing them to get along can never work. Nigeria has never functioned as a country and will never function as one.

Nigeria worsens daily; each succeeding government makes the economy worse than its predecessor. During General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida IBB's days, people complained that things were terrible. When General Sani Abacha came, people cried that IBB's days were better. The same thing happened when General Abdulsalami Abubakar took over after General Abacha's death.

The trend continued through presidents Obasanjo and Yaradua. It was different during President Goodluck Jonathan because things started looking up. Still, Goodluck Jonathan, a Biafran, was not allowed to continue in office. The downward trend continued during President Muhammadu Buhari's term. Toward the end of President Muhammadu Buhari's second term, Nigerians suffered so much that they openly prayed to God not to miss him (Buhari being better than the incoming president). Unfortunately, less than two years into his successor, President Tinubu's tenure, Nigerians are going through their worst nightmare: they miss President Buhari because their suffering has tripled.

The country keeps going down and down every day. Today, fuel is no longer affordable to people at 1,250 Naira per litre. Foodstuffs like a bag of rice are sold at above 100,000 Naira, and a cup of beans is sold at 500 naira. How much were these foodstuffs sold during the days of Buhari, and how much were they sold during the regime of President Goodluck Jonathan? As a Biafran, Goodluck Jonathan has the magic that would have transformed and sustained Nigeria. The country was doing well during his regime, but because of the hatred Nigerians have for Biafrans, the powers that be worked against him and pushed him out of office.

As President Goodluck Jonathan has shown, Biafrans are talented, intelligent, and hardworking. They have what it takes to turn the country's fortunes around. Still, the hatred and envy other tribes have against Biafrans prevent them from allowing Biafrans to rescue the country. In the last election, it was clear that Peter Obi was the best candidate; even the blind, deaf, and dumb knew he would have done better. Still, he was rigged out because he is a Biafran, and the country is not better for it. The Fulani and Yoruba cabal are more comfortable in embracing hardship than allowing a Biafran to rule.

During President Goodluck Jonathan's regime, Nigeria was the biggest economy in Africa and the third fastest-growing economy in the world. Where is Nigeria now? It is rapidly descending into the abyss. Nigeria is now the poverty capital of the world. Citizens cannot afford one square meal a day. People are dying like flies. Insecurity is at its highest, and infrastructure is dilapidated. While the citizens are crushed under hardship, politicians are unaffected as they dip their hands into the lean national treasury to care for themselves and their families. They go abroad for medical treatment, and their children obtain their education abroad.

Nigeria deteriorates and worsens every day because it cannot function as a country. The best we can do to survive as humans is to embrace self-determination and let everyone go their separate ways and develop at their own pace. Peaceful separation will encourage healthy competition, mutual respect, cooperation and support. Suppose these characteristically distinct nations continue to co-habit in one system. In that case, Nigeria will continue to deteriorate until the right thing is done. We have no choice but to adhere to the words of our founding fathers and know that there is no nation called Nigeria but a collection of strange bedfellows.
