As the Anambra state gubernatorial election approaches, reports have emerged of political thugs threatening members of rival parties, resulting in confrontations. Recently, some of these thugs invaded Ekwuluobia, opening fire at security checkpoints with their weapons to gain access. They refused to be searched by security personnel, taking them by surprise and resulting in a significant number of fatalities.
These individuals are believed to be affiliated with the ruling party at the Centre, the APC party. They drove through Isu Ofia -Igbo Ukwu road; on getting to Ekwuluobia, they opened fire, shooting sporadically and injuring innocent civilians who were going about their normal daily businesses.
After heavy gunshots in Ekwuluobia, another set of political thugs invaded Oko, a neighboring town to Ekwuluobia, through Amaokpala Ufuma road and opened fire at power junction Oko. The Police, Ebube Agu, Udogachi and other vigilante units fled as they could not match the armed thugs.
They operated for hours and departed in their vehicles without a challenge.
At the time of filing this report, the number of casualties is yet to be ascertained.
