On May 30, 1967, Lt. Col. C. Odumegwu Ojukwu declared the Republic of Biafra — an act that triggered the Nigerian Civil War (1967–1970).
What followed remains one of the darkest chapters in Nigeria’s history. An estimated one to three million people perished — the majority not from bullets, but from starvation, disease, and the effects of a total blockade. Every year, Biafra Heroes Day is observed to honour the fathers, mothers, and children who were lost — entire communities wiped out by war and famine.
Remembrance is not only about the past. Today, communities in the Southeast and parts of the Middle Belt continue to face violent attacks, killings, and mass displacement. For many, the cycle of fear and loss that began decades ago has never truly ended.
May 30 is therefore both a memorial and a mirror.
It is about memory.
It is about identity.
It is about the courage to ask difficult questions.
The world must bear witness.
History must not be allowed to repeat itself.
