The Igbo people of southeast Nigeria have become endangered species

On the 6th of June 2025, the Igbo race in Ogun State embarked on a 4 day Sit at Home protest against the killing of Mrs. Eze in Southwest Ogun State by the lazy Yoruba market touts who went on revenue drive in the market to raise funds for Muslim celebration of Eid Mubarak festival.

On the fateful day, they stormed the shop of the late Mrs. Blessing Eze, a Christian, to demand a levy of one thousand five hundred naira (1,500), but she appealed to them to give her a little time to sell her products and raise the money for them. She asked them to come back later to collect the illegal Levy. Her appeal was rejected by one of them, who immediately began pulling down her goods. When she tried to save her goods from the destruction, another one pulled out a sword and stabbed her in the chest. She fell in a pool of her blood. Traders who witnessed this madness tried to rush her to the hospital, but unfortunately, she died from loss of blood.

It is not surprising that nobody has been arrested or even invited by the police authorities for questioning to date. The continued killing of Igbo people by Nigerians of other ethnic groups in Nigeria must be brought to a halt. This dastardly act of always taking the life of Igbo people has continued unabated since 1945 till date.

One may ask, what crime have the Igbo people committed in Nigeria? Why do other tribes take pleasure in shedding the blood of innocent people from the southeast? Whenever there is a conflict between different tribes in Nigeria, they often declare war on Ndigbo. If their businesses are not thriving, they go on a rampage against the Ndigbo.

During Islamic celebrations, which have no connection to the Christian Igbo community, they impose illegal taxes on the Igbo. If there are any disputes, they resort to violence and pull their sword against the Igbo. The same narrative plays out in the north; whenever there are issues among other tribes, the Igbo people nearby are often the first victims.

The most traumatizing aspect of these killings is that the security agencies will do nothing to punish the culprits. Without consequences, the killings continue. The governor of the state remains silent as if nothing has happened. For how long will this recklessness and lawlessness persist? When will the Yoruba people put an end to the unprovoked ethnic cleansing of the Igbo people residing in their territory?

The Midwest region was established before the war mainly due to the historical context involving the Igbo people who lived in Benin. They were often used in rituals by the Yoruba. Unfortunately, there is no record in Nigerian history indicating that the Igbo people, while conducting their businesses in various parts of Nigeria, have ever endangered or harmed anyone in the host communities. The Igbo are recognized as one of the most peaceful indigenous groups in Nigeria, known for their creativity and resilience in all they undertake.

It is deeply concerning that no government authority has issued a statement condemning the murder of Mrs. Eze days after her death. It is important to note that such killings in the northern region of Nigeria sparked the Nigerian Biafra War. The unprovoked ethnic cleansing, which resulted in the deaths of over 200,000 Igbo people in Northern Nigeria, ultimately led to the declaration of the sovereign state of Biafra in 1967.

The Igbo people have repeatedly called for a sovereign state to be free from the violence and injustices they experience in Nigeria. If we cannot be treated as equals by other ethnic groups in the country, it would be wise for Nigeria to support a referendum for the Southeast region, allowing the people to determine their own future. Biafrans should be empowered to take their destiny into their own hands, as it is better to be alone than to be in the wrong company.

This killing has become unbearable, and again, we demand the independence of Biafra now to avoid going into another war.

May the souls of Mrs. Eze and all those killed by other ethnic groups in Nigeria continue to rest in peace.
