Terrorist Label on Nigeria’s APC and PDP: Canadian Court Judgment Shakes Political Foundations

The pronouncements of Justice Phuong Ngo, in a Canadian Federal High Court, ruled that the collateral damage will undoubtedly affect other citizens since two terrorist political parties have sponsored the government of their homeland. Nigeria's two dominant parties "use violence, coercion and subversion of democratic institutions in their bid to acquire political power."

Following this ruling, he described both parties as entities engaging in conduct amounting to Terrorism under Canadian law. The ruling came in the dismissal of Douglas Egharevba's asylum appeal, a Nigerian national. Justice Ngo affirmed that mere membership in an organization linked to Terrorism or democratic subversion is enough to trigger inadmissibility under paragraph 34(1)(f) of the IRPA, even without proof of personal involvement.

A clearer view of this judgment can be better unveiled if you search Nigeria's Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act 2022. Terrorism is defined as the use of violence, intimidation, or coercive tactics with political or ideological motives to achieve a goal. These are frequent actions observed during elections in Nigeria, which alone makes the Canadian judgment very accurate.

It is common knowledge that APC and PDP rig elections and announce fake results with the assistance of armed thugs, Police and Military personnel. The Judiciary helps these criminals to seal the deal. It is uncontestable that Electoral processes in Nigeria have often been marred by violence, killings, and voter intimidation without perpetrators facing justice.

The collateral damage will undoubtedly affect other citizens since the government of their homeland has been sponsored by two terrorist political parties.

Casting our minds back to the administration of former President Goodluck E. Jonathan, he once said that Boko Haram terrorists were in his government. Sadly, none of his cabinet members has protested against that claim to date. We can still recall the massive killings, bombings, abductions and all manner of terrorist activities that go on in Nigeria during elections. In fact, to date, nothing has changed.

Over 300 Chibok school girls were abducted during President Jonathan's regime. Many are still held to this day, including Leah Shuaibu, who is a Christian. We had Governors, Ministers, Senators, and other government functionaries presiding over the country, but they were all silent.

The late president Muhammadu Buhari of today's ruling party, APC, was captured during an Election period saying that if he was not declared the winner of the election, "baboons and monkeys will be soaked in blood". And true to his threat, violence that claimed scores of lives erupted in northern Nigeria after he lost the election. The "Blood" in the context referred to the blood of innocent Nigerian citizens.

Rotimi Amaechi, the then-governor of Rivers State, also threatened to establish a parallel government if his principal in the APC was not declared the winner in the gubernatorial election. There were regular protests on the streets, and the media consistently fired salvos against the PDP President in support of the APC.

In the next election, the APC party dished out more threats. They imported terrorists and contracted the umbrella body of Fulani herders, the Miyetti Allah, to bring in more terrorist fighters to carry out the threat. This plot was facilitated by the then-APC Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai.

One month before that Election, hundreds of thousands of Fulani fighters were brought in from Sudan, Mali, Libya and other sub-Saharan African countries. The Buhari APC administration released 100 billion naira from the state Treasury to Miyetti Allah to pay these terrorists off for a job well done.

According to the constitutions of both countries, the judgment of Justice Phuong Ngo was delivered correctly. It is a welcome development to designate APC and PDP as terrorist organizations by the Canadian Federal High Court because all their activities point to acts of Terrorism.
